Bread roll

Posted on April 1, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a simple recipe for soft, fluffy bread rolls—perfect for sandwiches, dinner sides, or breakfast.

Ingredients (makes 12 rolls)

  • 4 cups (500 g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup (240 ml) warm milk (110°F / 43°C)
  • 1/4 cup (50 g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup (60 g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • Optional: melted butter for brushing

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast:
    • In a small bowl, mix warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle yeast on top and let it sit 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Make the dough:
    • In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
    • Add yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough:
    • Knead on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
    • Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5–6 minutes.
  4. First rise:
    • Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours, until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the rolls:
    • Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces.
    • Shape each piece into a ball and place on a greased or parchment-lined baking tray.
  6. Second rise:
    • Cover and let rise 30–45 minutes until puffy.
  7. Bake:
    • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Bake rolls for 15–20 minutes, until golden brown.
  8. Optional:
    • Brush warm rolls with melted butter for a soft, shiny finish.

Tips

  • For extra soft rolls, replace 1/4 cup of milk with an equal amount of cream.
  • You can add herbs, garlic, or cheese to the dough for flavored rolls.
  • Rolls freeze well; just thaw and warm before serving.

If you want, I can give a quick no-yeast version that uses baking powder for soft rolls in under 30 minutes. Do you want me to do that?
