🍳 Basic Bread Roll Recipe

Ingredients (Makes 8 rolls)

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water (105–110°F / 40–43°C)
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp instant yeast
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil

Steps

  1. Make the dough
    • In a bowl, mix flour, salt, sugar, and yeast.
    • Add warm water and butter/oil. Knead 8–10 minutes until smooth.
  2. First rise
    • Cover with a damp cloth. Let rise 1–1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  3. Shape rolls
    • Punch down dough, divide into 8 equal pieces.
    • Shape into balls or ovals.
  4. Second rise
    • Place on a baking tray lined with parchment.
    • Cover and let rise 30–40 minutes.
  5. Bake
    • Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F).
    • Optional: brush tops with milk or egg for a shiny finish.
    • Bake 15–20 minutes until golden brown.

  • Knead well → develops gluten for soft, fluffy rolls
  • Don’t over-bake → keeps interior soft
  • Optional toppings: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or coarse salt
