🍽️ Biscuits and Gravy

Biscuits and gravy is a classic Southern breakfast comfort dish — soft, flaky biscuits smothered in a rich, creamy sausage gravy.

📝 Southern-Style Biscuits and Gravy Recipe

Ingredients

Biscuits

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • ¾ cup buttermilk

Sausage Gravy

  • 1 lb breakfast sausage (pork, spicy or mild)
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2–3 cups whole milk (adjust for thickness)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Optional: pinch of cayenne or crushed red pepper

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Make Biscuits

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in buttermilk until dough forms.
  5. Roll or pat dough to 1-inch thickness. Cut with biscuit cutter.
  6. Bake 12–15 minutes until golden brown.

2️⃣ Make Gravy

  1. Cook sausage in a skillet over medium heat until browned, breaking it into small crumbles.
  2. Sprinkle flour over sausage; cook 1–2 minutes, stirring.
  3. Gradually whisk in milk.
  4. Simmer, stirring, until gravy thickens (5–10 minutes).
  5. Season with salt, pepper, and optional cayenne.

3️⃣ Serve

Split biscuits and pour gravy over the top. Serve hot.

🔥 Tips for Perfect Biscuits and Gravy

  • Use cold butter for flakier biscuits.
  • Don’t overmix the biscuit dough.
  • Adjust milk in gravy to desired thickness.
  • Leftover gravy can be stored in the fridge for a couple of days; reheat gently.

🍳 Variations

  • Country-style gravy: Use pan drippings from ham or roast instead of sausage.
  • Spicy gravy: Add cayenne, hot sauce, or chopped jalapeños.
  • Cheese gravy: Stir in shredded cheddar or pepper jack.

If you want, I can also give a shortcut version using frozen biscuits for quick weeknight breakfasts.
