Beef tips

Posted on February 27, 2026 by Admin

“Beef tips” usually refer to tender pieces of beef, often cut from sirloin, chuck, or round, that are cooked in a sauce or gravy. They’re great for serving over rice, noodles, mashed potatoes, or even biscuits.

Common Ways to Prepare Beef Tips

  1. Smothered beef tips – Seared and cooked in a rich gravy made from beef broth, onions, and sometimes mushrooms.
  2. Slow-cooked beef tips – Simmered in a crockpot or Dutch oven until meltingly tender.
  3. Stroganoff-style – Cooked with mushrooms and onions, then finished with sour cream for a creamy sauce.

Simple Beef Tips Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb beef tips (sirloin, chuck, or stew meat)
  • 2 tbsp oil or butter
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp flour or cornstarch (for thickening)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  1. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the beef tips on all sides, then remove from the pan.
  2. Sauté onions, garlic, and mushrooms until soft.
  3. Sprinkle flour over the veggies, stir, then slowly add beef broth and Worcestershire sauce to create a gravy.
  4. Return beef tips to the pan, reduce heat, cover, and simmer 15–20 minutes until beef is tender and sauce thickens.
  5. Season to taste and serve over rice, noodles, or mashed potatoes.

If you want, I can give a slow-cooker version that makes the beef extremely tender without much hands-on time. It’s a favorite for weeknight dinners. Do you want that version too?
