Beef and onion casserole

Posted on February 28, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic Beef and Onion Casserole recipe—hearty, savory, and perfect for a comforting dinner:

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme or rosemary
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon flour (optional, for thickening)
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or Swiss) for topping (optional)
  • Optional: mashed potatoes or biscuit topping

Instructions

1. Preheat oven:

  • Preheat to 375°F (190°C).

2. Cook the beef:

  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain excess fat.
  • Add garlic and cook 1 minute until fragrant.

3. Cook the onions:

  • In the same skillet, add sliced onions and cook until soft and lightly caramelized, about 10 minutes.
  • Sprinkle flour over onions (if using) and stir to combine.

4. Combine and simmer:

  • Stir in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  • Simmer 5 minutes until mixture thickens slightly.

5. Assemble casserole:

  • Transfer beef and onion mixture to a baking dish.
  • Top with shredded cheese, mashed potatoes, or biscuit topping if desired.

6. Bake:

  • Bake for 20–25 minutes until the topping is golden and bubbly.

Tips

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of red wine to the beef while simmering.
  • Caramelize onions slowly to bring out natural sweetness.
  • This casserole can be made ahead and baked just before serving.

I can also give you a slow cooker version of beef and onion casserole where everything cooks low and slow for tender, flavorful results. Do you want that version?
