Classic Baked Potato Recipe

Ingredients (Serves 1–4)

  • 1–4 large russet potatoes
  • Olive oil
  • Salt
  • Optional toppings: butter, sour cream, shredded cheese, bacon bits, chives

Instructions

1. Preheat Oven

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

2. Prepare the Potato

  1. Scrub potatoes clean and pat dry.
  2. Pierce each potato several times with a fork to allow steam to escape.
  3. Rub the skin with olive oil and sprinkle generously with salt.

3. Bake

  • Place potatoes directly on the oven rack or on a baking sheet.
  • Bake 45–60 minutes, depending on size, until the skin is crisp and a fork easily pierces the potato.

4. Serve

  1. Cut a slit in the top of the potato and gently fluff the inside with a fork.
  2. Add toppings such as butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon bits, or chives.

Tips

  • Crispier skin: Bake directly on the oven rack, not on a tray.
  • Faster version: Microwave on high 5–10 minutes, then finish in the oven for crisp skin.
  • Extra flavor: Rub skin with garlic powder or smoked paprika before baking.
