Amish onion fritters

🧅 Amish Onion Fritters

Amish onion fritters are simple, old-fashioned comfort food — crispy on the outside, tender and savory inside. They’re often served as a side dish at Amish-style restaurants and community gatherings.

Here’s a classic version:

📝 Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet onions (finely chopped)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornmeal (optional, for extra crunch)
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¾ cup milk
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Prep the onions
Finely chop onions. The smaller the pieces, the better the fritters hold together.
  2. Mix dry ingredients
In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. Add wet ingredients
Stir in milk until you get a thick batter.
  4. Fold in onions
Mix chopped onions into the batter. It will be chunky — that’s perfect.
  5. Heat oil
Pour about ½ inch of oil into a skillet. Heat to 350–375°F (175–190°C).
  6. Fry
Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil and gently flatten.
Fry 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  7. Drain
Remove and place on paper towels. Sprinkle lightly with salt while hot.

🧂 Optional Variations

  • Add 1 egg for richer texture
  • Mix in chopped parsley
  • Add a pinch of paprika or garlic powder
  • Stir in a few tablespoons of buttermilk instead of regular milk for tanginess

🍽️ Serving Ideas

  • With sour cream or ranch
  • Alongside fried chicken
  • As a side for roast beef
  • With applesauce (traditional-style pairing)

If you’d like, I can also give you a baked (lighter) version or a sweet Amish-style corn fritter recipe.
