American goulash

Posted on March 12, 2026 by Admin

American Goulash is a classic, comforting one-pot meal popular in the U.S., especially for family dinners. Unlike traditional Hungarian goulash, which uses chunks of beef and a rich paprika sauce, American goulash is made with ground beef, elbow macaroni, and a tomato-based sauce, often seasoned simply with onions, garlic, and mild spices. It’s hearty, filling, and budget-friendly.

Ingredients (serves 4–6)

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups uncooked elbow macaroni
  • 2 cups beef broth or water
  • Optional: shredded cheddar cheese for topping

Instructions

  1. Brown the beef:
In a large skillet or Dutch oven, cook the ground beef over medium heat until fully browned. Drain excess fat.
  2. Sauté onions and garlic:
Add the chopped onion and garlic to the beef. Cook until soft and fragrant, about 3–5 minutes.
  3. Add tomato and seasoning:
Stir in tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, paprika, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Bring to a gentle simmer.
  4. Cook the pasta:
Add uncooked elbow macaroni and beef broth. Stir, cover, and simmer on low for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is tender and the sauce thickens.
  5. Serve:
Optionally, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top before serving. Serve hot.

💡 Tips:

  • You can add bell peppers, mushrooms, or even corn for extra flavor and veggies.
  • For a creamier texture, stir in a little cream or milk at the end.
  • Leftovers are great for lunches the next day, as the flavors deepen overnight.

If you like, I can give a quick 20-minute stovetop version that’s perfect for busy weeknights.
