Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion, and Garlic

Ingredients

  • 1 small head of cabbage (about 2 lbs), shredded or chopped
  • 4–6 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Optional: pinch of red pepper flakes for heat

Instructions

  1. Cook bacon
    In a large skillet over medium heat, cook bacon until crisp. Remove bacon, leaving drippings in the pan.
  2. Sauté onions
    Add onions to the bacon drippings and cook 3–4 minutes until softened.
  3. Add garlic
    Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Cook cabbage
    Add shredded cabbage, tossing to coat in bacon fat. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 10–15 minutes until tender and slightly caramelized.
  5. Season
    Return bacon to the pan, season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes if using. Stir to combine.
  6. Serve hot
    As a side dish or over rice/potatoes.

  • Quick version: Use pre-shredded cabbage for faster cooking.
  • Extra flavor: Add a splash of apple cider vinegar or a pinch of sugar to balance flavors.
  • Smoky: Use smoked paprika if you want more smokiness.
  • Vegetarian: Skip bacon and add olive oil + smoked salt.
