Pepper steak

Here’s a classic Pepper Steak recipe 🥩🌶️
Tender beef, crisp peppers, and a savory sauce—better than takeout.


Pepper Steak

Ingredients

  • 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 Tbsp oil (vegetable or sesame)

Vegetables

  • 2 bell peppers (red & green), sliced
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, minced (optional)

Sauce

  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 3 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp oyster sauce (optional but recommended)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. Marinate beef
    Toss beef with 2 Tbsp soy sauce and 1 Tbsp cornstarch. Set aside 15 minutes.
  2. Mix sauce
    Whisk all sauce ingredients together.
  3. Stir-fry beef
    Heat oil in a hot skillet or wok. Sear beef quickly (1–2 minutes) until just browned. Remove.
  4. Cook vegetables
    Add peppers and onion; stir-fry 2–3 minutes. Add garlic and ginger.
  5. Combine
    Return beef to pan. Pour in sauce and cook until thickened, 1–2 minutes.
  6. Serve hot over rice or noodles.

Tips & Variations

  • Extra tender: Add ½ tsp baking soda to beef for 10 minutes, then rinse
  • Spicy: Add crushed red pepper or chili paste
  • Low-sodium: Use low-sodium soy sauce
  • No oyster sauce: Substitute hoisin or extra soy

Serving Suggestions

Serve with steamed rice, fried rice, or lo mein.
