Here’s a classic Chicken-Fried Steak recipe — crispy, golden, and smothered in creamy gravy 🍽️🥩

Chicken-Fried Steak

Serves: 4
Time: 45–50 minutes

Ingredients

For the Steak:

  • 4 beef cube steaks (about ½ inch thick)
  • Salt and black pepper
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup milk
  • Vegetable oil for frying

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp pan drippings or butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

1️⃣ Prepare the Steaks

  • Pat steaks dry and season both sides with salt and pepper.

2️⃣ Dredge the Steaks

  • In one shallow bowl, combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  • In another bowl, whisk eggs with milk.
  • Dip each steak in egg mixture, then coat with seasoned flour.
  • Repeat for extra crispiness if desired.

3️⃣ Fry the Steaks

  • Heat about ¼ inch of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Fry steaks 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through.
  • Remove and drain on paper towels.

4️⃣ Make the Gravy

  • Remove excess oil, leaving 2 tbsp in the skillet.
  • Stir in 2 tbsp flour and cook 1–2 minutes until lightly browned.
  • Gradually whisk in milk, stirring constantly until thickened.
  • Season with salt and pepper.

5️⃣ Serve

  • Serve the chicken-fried steaks hot, topped with creamy gravy.
  • Classic sides: mashed potatoes, green beans, or corn.

Tips & Variations

  • For extra tenderness, pound steaks slightly before dredging.
  • Use a cast-iron skillet for even, golden crust.
  • Spice up the flour with cayenne pepper or smoked paprika for a little heat.

If you want, I can also give a baked version of chicken-fried steak that’s lighter but still crispy and delicious.
