Old-fashioned rice pudding

Posted on February 24, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a comforting Old-Fashioned Rice Pudding recipe — creamy, lightly sweet, and perfect for dessert 🍚✨

Old-Fashioned Rice Pudding

Serves: 4–6
Time: ~45–50 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup uncooked white rice (medium or short grain preferred)
  • 4 cups milk (whole milk for creaminess)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup raisins (optional)
  • Optional garnish: extra cinnamon, nutmeg, or a dollop of whipped cream

Instructions

1️⃣ Cook the Rice

  • In a medium saucepan, bring 2 cups of milk to a simmer.
  • Stir in rice and salt.
  • Reduce heat to low, cover partially, and cook 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until rice is tender and most liquid is absorbed.

2️⃣ Add Sugar & Remaining Milk

  • Stir in sugar and remaining 2 cups milk.
  • Continue cooking over low heat 15–20 minutes, stirring frequently until pudding thickens to creamy consistency.

3️⃣ Add Flavorings

  • Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract, cinnamon, and raisins (if using).

4️⃣ Serve

  • Can be served warm or chilled.
  • Sprinkle extra cinnamon or nutmeg on top before serving.

Tips & Variations

  • For extra creaminess, stir in ½ cup cream at the end.
  • Add a little butter or coconut milk for a richer texture.
  • Top with caramel sauce, chopped nuts, or fresh fruit for variety.

If you want, I can also give a baked old-fashioned rice pudding version that has a lightly golden, caramelized top — even more traditional.
