Pecan pie

Warm, hearty, and pure comfort — Shepherd’s Pie is the ultimate cozy dinner. 🥔🥩 Traditionally it’s made with lamb (that’s what makes it Shepherd’s pie). If you use beef, it’s technically cottage pie — but both are delicious.

Here’s a classic version:


Classic Shepherd’s Pie

Serves 6

Ingredients

For the Meat Filling

  • 1½ lbs ground lamb (or beef)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup carrots, diced
  • ½ cup peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme (or ½ tsp dried)
  • 1 tsp rosemary (optional)
  • Salt & black pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

For the Mashed Potato Topping

  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk or cream
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar (optional but delicious)
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Mashed Potatoes

  • Boil potatoes in salted water 15–20 minutes until fork-tender.
  • Drain and mash with butter and milk until smooth.
  • Stir in cheese if using. Set aside.

2️⃣ Cook the Filling

  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Sauté onion and carrots 5 minutes.
  • Add garlic; cook 30 seconds.
  • Add ground lamb and cook until browned.
  • Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire, thyme, rosemary, salt, and pepper.
  • Pour in beef broth and simmer 8–10 minutes until slightly thickened.
  • Stir in peas.

3️⃣ Assemble

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Spread meat mixture in a baking dish.
  • Spoon mashed potatoes over the top and smooth evenly.
  • Use a fork to create texture on top (helps browning).

4️⃣ Bake

  • Bake 20–25 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  • Broil 2–3 minutes at the end for extra golden peaks.

🔥 Pro Tips

  • For richer flavor, add a splash of red wine to the filling.
  • Add corn for a more traditional American-style version.
  • Let rest 10 minutes before serving — it slices cleaner.
