🌮 Tostada

A tostada is a crisp, flat tortilla topped with a variety of ingredients such as beans, meat, cheese, lettuce, salsa, and avocado. It’s a staple in Mexican cuisine and is similar to an open-faced taco.

📝 Classic Tostada Recipe (Serves 2–4)

Ingredients

  • 4 small corn tortillas
  • Oil for frying (or use baked tortillas for a lighter version)
  • 1 cup refried beans
  • 1 cup cooked shredded chicken, beef, or pork
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • ½ cup diced tomatoes
  • ½ cup shredded cheese (cheddar or Mexican blend)
  • ¼ cup diced onions (optional)
  • ¼ cup sliced olives (optional)
  • ¼ cup sour cream or Mexican crema
  • Salsa or hot sauce to taste
  • Sliced avocado or guacamole

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Prepare Tortillas

  • Fried method: Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Fry tortillas 1–2 minutes per side until crisp and golden. Drain on paper towels.
  • Baked method: Brush tortillas lightly with oil, place on a baking sheet, and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 5–7 minutes until crispy.

2️⃣ Layer the Tostada

  1. Spread a thin layer of refried beans on the tortilla.
  2. Add shredded meat evenly on top.
  3. Sprinkle shredded cheese and diced onions.
  4. Top with lettuce, tomatoes, olives, and avocado.
  5. Drizzle with sour cream and salsa.

3️⃣ Serve

  • Serve immediately to maintain the crispiness of the tortilla.

🔥 Tips

  • For extra flavor, season beans with cumin, garlic, and chili powder.
  • Add pickled jalapeños or hot sauce for a spicy kick.
  • Use small tostada shells from the store for convenience.
  • Layer ingredients carefully to avoid soggy tortillas.

🍽️ Serving Ideas

  • As a light lunch or appetizer
  • With Mexican rice and beans on the side
  • Serve with fresh lime wedges for extra brightness
  • Pair with a cold Mexican soda or margarita for a fun meal

I can also give a sheet-pan tostada version where all ingredients are baked together for an easy weeknight meal, or a vegetarian black bean tostada option. Do you want one of these versions?
