Here’s a classic, comforting recipe for hamburger steak with gravy — juicy beef patties smothered in savory brown gravy.


🍽️ Hamburger Steak with Gravy

Ingredients

For the Patties

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped or grated
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)

For the Gravy

  • 2 tablespoons butter or oil
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce

Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Patties

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce.
  2. Shape into 4–6 oval or round patties.

2️⃣ Brown the Patties

  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat with a little oil.
  2. Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side (they don’t need to cook fully yet).
  3. Remove patties and set aside.

3️⃣ Make the Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter (or use drippings).
  2. Sauté sliced onions until soft.
  3. Sprinkle flour over onions, stirring to make a roux (1–2 minutes).
  4. Slowly whisk in beef broth until smooth.
  5. Bring to a simmer until thickened (3–5 minutes).
  6. Season with salt, pepper, and optional Worcestershire or soy sauce.

4️⃣ Finish Cooking

  1. Return patties to the skillet.
  2. Spoon gravy over them.
  3. Cover and simmer 5–10 minutes until patties are fully cooked (internal temp 160°F / 71°C).

5️⃣ Serve

  • Over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
  • Garnish with parsley if desired.
