A loaf of soft, white bread is that classic fluffy bread with a light crumb and thin, tender crust—great for sandwiches, toast, or just with butter.

Simple homemade white bread loaf

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2¼ tsp yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup warm milk (or water)
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 tsp salt

Steps

  1. Activate yeast
    Mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Make dough
    Add flour, salt, and butter. Mix and knead for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. First rise
    Cover and let it rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours until doubled.
  4. Shape
    Punch down, shape into a log, and place in a greased loaf pan.
  5. Second rise
    Let it rise again for 30–45 minutes.
  6. Bake
    180°C (350°F) for 25–30 minutes until golden on top.
  7. Cool
    Let it cool before slicing (this keeps it soft inside).

Tips for extra softness

  • Use milk instead of water
  • Add a little extra butter for richness
  • Cover the loaf with a cloth after baking to keep the crust soft
