Posted on April 20, 2026 by Admin

Hamburger Potato Casserole is a hearty baked dish made with layers of ground beef, potatoes, and creamy cheese sauce. It’s rich, filling, and perfect for family dinners or meal prep.

🥔🍔 Hamburger Potato Casserole

Ingredients

  • 500g ground beef
  • 4–5 medium potatoes (thinly sliced)
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tbsp oil or butter
  • 1 tsp salt (to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika or chili powder
  • 1 tsp dried herbs (oregano or thyme)

Cream sauce

  • 1 cup milk or cream
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)

🍳 Instructions

1. Cook beef layer

  • Heat oil in a pan
  • Sauté onion until soft, add garlic
  • Add ground beef and cook until browned
  • Season with salt, pepper, paprika, and herbs
  • Drain excess fat if needed

2. Make creamy sauce

  • Melt butter in a saucepan
  • Add flour and cook 1–2 minutes (roux)
  • Slowly whisk in milk until smooth
  • Cook until slightly thickened
  • Stir in cheese until melted

3. Assemble casserole

In a baking dish:

  1. Layer sliced potatoes
  2. Add half the beef mixture
  3. Pour some cream sauce
  4. Repeat layers
  5. Finish with cheese on top

4. Bake

  • Cover with foil
  • Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 40–50 minutes
  • Remove foil last 10 minutes to brown the top

5. Rest & serve

Let it sit 5–10 minutes before cutting so it holds shape.

💡 Tips for best casserole

  • Slice potatoes thin so they cook evenly
  • Pre-cooking beef helps avoid excess grease
  • Covering while baking ensures soft potatoes
  • Add extra cheese on top for a golden crust

🍽️ Variations

  • 🧀 Extra cheesy version with multiple cheese layers
  • 🌶️ Spicy version with chili flakes or jalapeños
  • 🥦 Veggie version with carrots, peas, or corn
  • 🥛 Creamy mushroom version for richer flavor

🍽️ Serving ideas

  • With fresh salad
  • Garlic bread or dinner rolls
  • Ketchup or spicy sauce on the side

If you want, I can give you a quick 30-minute version, a slow-cooker hamburger potato casserole, or a low-carb cauliflower substitute version.
