Shepherd’s pie

Posted on April 20, 2026 by Admin

Shepherd’s pie is a comforting baked dish with a savory meat base and a creamy mashed potato topping. Traditionally it uses lamb, but beef is commonly used too (often called “cottage pie”).

🥧 Shepherd’s Pie (Classic Version)

Ingredients

Meat filling

  • 500g ground lamb (or beef)
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1–2 carrots (diced small)
  • 1/2 cup peas (optional)
  • 2 tbsp oil or butter
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional but adds depth)
  • 1 tsp salt (to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp dried thyme or mixed herbs
  • 1/2 cup beef stock or water

Mashed potato topping

  • 4–5 potatoes (peeled & boiled)
  • 2–3 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup milk (warm)
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1/2 cup shredded cheese (for topping)

🍳 Instructions

1. Make mashed potatoes

  • Boil potatoes until soft
  • Mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper
  • Set aside (smooth but slightly thick consistency is best)

2. Cook the meat filling

  • Heat oil in a pan
  • Sauté onion until soft, then add garlic
  • Add ground meat and cook until browned
  • Stir in carrots and cook 3–4 minutes
  • Add tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, herbs, salt, and pepper
  • Pour in stock and simmer 10–15 minutes until thick (not watery)
  • Add peas at the end

3. Assemble

  • Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F)
  • Spread meat mixture in a baking dish
  • Layer mashed potatoes evenly on top
  • Use a fork to create ridges (helps crisping)
  • Optional: sprinkle cheese on top

4. Bake

  • Bake for 20–25 minutes until top is golden
  • Broil 2–3 minutes for extra crisp edges if desired

💡 Tips for best Shepherd’s Pie

  • Keep meat filling thick—watery filling ruins the layers
  • Slightly dry mashed potatoes hold shape better
  • Fork ridges on top = better browning
  • Let it rest 5–10 minutes before serving

🍽️ Variations

  • Cheesy version: mix cheese into mash + top layer
  • Spicy twist: add chili flakes or green chilies
  • Desi fusion: add cumin, coriander, and a pinch of garam masala
  • Low-carb: replace potatoes with mashed cauliflower

If you want, I can give you a quick stovetop shepherd’s pie (no oven), a restaurant-style ultra-creamy version, or a meal-prep version for multiple days.
