Miso soup

Ah, Salisbury Steak—a hearty, comforting classic! It’s essentially seasoned ground beef patties simmered in a rich, savory brown gravy, perfect with mashed potatoes or egg noodles. Here’s a classic approach:

Ingredients

For the patties:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: sliced mushrooms for extra flavor

Instructions

1. Make the Patties

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. Mix gently until combined, then shape into 4 oval patties.

2. Brown the Patties

  1. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a little oil.
  2. Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side (they don’t need to cook through yet). Remove and set aside.

3. Make the Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté mushrooms if using.
  2. Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes to make a roux.
  3. Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer until slightly thickened, about 3–5 minutes.
  4. Season with salt and pepper.

4. Simmer Patties

  1. Return browned patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over them.
  2. Cover and simmer 10–15 minutes until patties are cooked through.

5. Serve

  • Spoon extra gravy over patties.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

💡 Tips:

  • Don’t overmix the meat; it keeps patties tender.
  • You can make the patties ahead and freeze them uncooked for easy meals later.
  • For a richer gravy, add a splash of cream or a teaspoon of Dijon mustard.

If you want, I can give a casserole-style Salisbury Steak version where everything bakes together for a one-pan comfort meal. It’s very popular for busy weeknights.

Do you want that version?
