Shepherd’s pie

Posted on March 31, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a comforting, classic Shepherd’s Pie—savory meat filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes and baked until golden:

🥧 Shepherd’s Pie

(Traditionally made with lamb; beef version is often called cottage pie—but both work great!)

🧾 Ingredients

For the filling:

  • 500–700 g ground lamb or beef
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp thyme or mixed herbs

For the mashed potato topping:

  • 3–4 potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ¼–½ cup milk
  • Salt to taste

🔪 Instructions

1. Make mashed potatoes
Boil potatoes until soft. Mash with butter, milk, and salt until smooth. Set aside.

2. Cook the filling

  • Heat oil, cook onion until soft
  • Add garlic and ground meat; cook until browned
  • Stir in carrots and cook a few minutes

3. Add flavor & sauce
Mix in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, broth, salt, pepper, and herbs.
Simmer 10–15 minutes until slightly thickened.

4. Add peas
Stir in peas and cook for a few more minutes.

5. Assemble

  • Spread meat filling in a baking dish
  • Top with mashed potatoes (spread evenly or pipe for texture)

6. Bake
Bake at 200°C (400°F) for 20–25 minutes until top is lightly golden.

🍽️ Tips for Best Shepherd’s Pie

  • Rough up the potato surface with a fork for crispy peaks
  • Add a little cheese to the potatoes for extra richness
  • Let it rest 10 minutes before serving so it sets nicely
  • Use lamb for authentic flavor, beef for a more common version

🧂 Variations

  • Cheesy topping: sprinkle cheddar on top before baking
  • Spicy twist: add chili flakes or green chilies 🌶️
  • Veggie-packed: add corn, mushrooms, or green beans

🥗 Serving Ideas

  • Simple green salad
  • Steamed vegetables
  • Pickles for contrast

If you want, I can give you a one-pan quick version, a slow cooker version, or a desi-style shepherd’s pie with stronger spices.
