Posted on March 30, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a hearty, comforting German-style sauerkraut with pork chops recipe—rich, tangy, and full of classic flavors:

🥩 German-Style Kraut with Pork Chops

🧾 Ingredients (serves 4)

  • 4 pork chops (bone-in or boneless)
  • 2 tbsp oil or butter
  • 1 small onion (sliced)
  • 2 cups sauerkraut (drained slightly)
  • 1 apple (peeled, sliced – optional but traditional)
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds (optional, classic German flavor)
  • ½ cup chicken broth or water
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp brown sugar (optional, to balance tanginess)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Season & sear pork chops
    • Pat pork chops dry and season with salt, pepper, and paprika.
    • Heat oil in a skillet and sear chops 3–4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  2. Cook the base
    • In the same pan, sauté onions until soft.
    • Add sauerkraut, apple slices, caraway seeds, and brown sugar. Stir well.
  3. Simmer together
    • Pour in broth and mix.
    • Place pork chops on top of the sauerkraut mixture.
    • Cover and simmer on low heat for 20–30 minutes until pork is tender and fully cooked.
  4. Serve
    • Serve pork chops over the sauerkraut mixture.

🍽️ Serving Ideas

  • With mashed potatoes or boiled potatoes
  • With crusty bread or German-style dumplings
  • Pair with mustard on the side

🔥 Tips & Variations

  • Oven version: After searing, bake everything covered at 180°C (350°F) for 30–40 minutes.
  • Richer flavor: Add a splash of apple cider or white wine.
  • Smoky twist: Add a little smoked sausage or bacon to the kraut.
  • Milder taste: Rinse sauerkraut briefly if you prefer less tang.

If you want, I can give you a slow cooker version where everything cooks together and the pork becomes extra tender and fall-apart juicy 👍
