Posted on January 24, 2026 by Admin

Ooo yes—Amish White Bread 🍞
Soft, slightly sweet, slices like a dream. This is the classic, old-school loaf everyone loves.

🍞 Amish White Bread (Makes 2 loaves)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)
  • ⅔ cup white sugar
  • 1½ tbsp active dry yeast
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil (or melted butter)
  • 1½ tsp salt
  • 6 cups all-purpose flour (about)

Instructions

  1. Activate yeast
In a large bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water.
Stir in yeast and let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix dough
    Add oil and salt.
Stir in flour 1 cup at a time until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead
Turn onto a floured surface and knead 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First rise
Place dough in a greased bowl, turn once.
Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
  5. Shape loaves
Punch down dough. Divide in half.
Shape into loaves and place in greased 9×5 pans.
  6. Second rise
Cover and let rise 30–45 minutes, until dough crowns over pans.
  7. Bake
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes, until golden brown.
  8. Cool
Brush tops with butter (optional but correct).
Remove from pans and cool on racks.

💡 Amish Bread Tips

  • Softer crust: brush with butter and cover with a towel while cooling
  • Sweeter loaf: add 1–2 tbsp honey
  • Freezes beautifully
  • Makes elite toast & grilled cheese

🧈 Variations

  • Amish Cinnamon Bread: swirl cinnamon sugar before shaping
  • Milk bread style: replace water with warm milk
  • Dinner rolls: shape into rolls, bake 15–18 min

If you want, I can give you a no-knead, bread machine, or half-batch version too.
