🍞 Amish White Bread (Makes 2 loaves)
Ingredients
- 2 cups warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)
- ⅔ cup white sugar
- 1½ tbsp active dry yeast
- ¼ cup vegetable oil (or melted butter)
- 1½ tsp salt
- 6 cups all-purpose flour (about)
Instructions
- Activate yeast
In a large bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water.
Stir in yeast and let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy. - Mix dough
Add oil and salt.
Stir in flour 1 cup at a time until a soft dough forms. - Knead
Turn onto a floured surface and knead 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic. - First rise
Place dough in a greased bowl, turn once.
Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour. - Shape loaves
Punch down dough. Divide in half.
Shape into loaves and place in greased 9×5 pans. - Second rise
Cover and let rise 30–45 minutes, until dough crowns over pans. - Bake
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes, until golden brown. - Cool
Brush tops with butter (optional but correct).
Remove from pans and cool on racks.
